REACTION - Immortals of Aveum heading to PS+ is a nice way for this original IP to earn a second wind

Roll dice for luck.

Immortals of Aveum had the unenviable task of establishing itself as a new IP in a busy release period, but also suffered because of its launch price point and middling reviews. For a game trying to break in to an exceptionally crowded calendar, the advertising was relatively muted, and charging full price wasn’t going to attract the most positive attention.

Even though it’s a sequel, you only have to look to Helldivers 2 as an example of how an independent team can price their game relative to the experience being offered and the scale of development. Thankfully, IOA is being added to PlayStation Plus in April, where it will hopefully capture renewed interest and find a wider audience.

Ultimately, we very much believe in the promise of new IP and experiences, and it would be nice if this gen would continue to push this sort of thing as a way to diversify industry output and give smaller teams a chance to shine. However, the player support needs to be there too. Here’s hoping developer Ascendant Studios secures a win here.

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
