REACTION - PlayStation’s new first party release approach is a welcome step

Spread the love.

Although gate keeping is inevitable amongst console warring dinosaurs who didn’t grow up with cross play, there is a seismic and inevitable shift toward a more interconnected gaming future that is impossible to ignore. Sony have recently clarified their approach to future first party releases, and despite the stubborn moaning of a loud minority, I’d argue it’s the right play.

Since they don’t seem interested (or able) to have Day 1 releases drop into their PS+ tiers, the focus on eventual PC ports is a smart one. Even though it sounds like PR guff, Hermen Hulst did comment on their intentions moving forward and made clear that wider releases will help fund expanding development costs.

Now that could easily be a “line”, in an attempt to placate people winging about the loss of “true exclusives”, but PlayStation Studios is a well established (and ever growing) operation. If more people get to play these games, even if there’s a delay between console and Steam, then that’s a win.

The stuff about cross gen and still supporting PS4 though: nope. Time to move on methinks!
