Despite an almighty license and superb developer pedigree, Marvel’s The Avengers arrived to a somewhat muted reception. Repetitive mission design and a slight audience disconnect from characters that were not quite different enough from their MCU equivalents, the game hasn’t quite captured the momentum that one would expect from such a juggernaut franchise.

However, a steady stream of tweaks and [eventually] meaningful story expansions have allowed it to carve a niche of its own, and its imminent arrival onto Game Pass will further boost its fortunes. This isn’t quite a “No Man’s Sky” level turnaround, but the injection of new players will renew interest in the upcoming roadmap, and give Marvel’s The Avengers a second wind.

There is still a huge amount of work to be done; the absence of proper cross play is a mis step, and the lack of regular new mission content leaves players who’ve already blasted through the endgame without many reasons to keep them coming back. “War for Wakanda” sized expansions are great, but since it’s pitched (and structured) like a live service title, smaller, regular doses of content could be a way to right the ship.
