We all love a sub.

Both the calorie-tastic, all steak bonanza of my regular order, and ones of the direct debit variety.

Here’s the thing. Microsoft stated recently that Game Pass on console growth has slowed (“well then release some faaaackin exclusive games then, you slag”). Meanwhile, Sony have lost around 2 million PS+ subscribers because, you know, people can go outside now (“A whole new world”). The takeaway from these statements can’t be that gaming subscriptions have reached critical mass because there’s three billion people on the planet who play games in some format or another. The potential audience is limitless.

So what Xbox and PlayStation need to do is continue evolving their services. If Redfall and Starfield had dropped in 2022, as per their original release schedule, Game Pass would be most likely performing handsomely. If God of War: Ragnarok was a Day 1 release on PlayStation’s highest tier of PS+, those subscribers would be sticking around and it would still sell like Mia Khalifa’s hotcakes.

Deliver those goods, and I can guarantee that we will “Toss a Coin to our Consoles, and bump up your numbers, with so many subs, ho ho ho”.
