REACTION - The Last of Us: Part 2 is still attracting trolls, and that’s stupid

There is a fascinating entitlement associated with certain “fans” of a franchise who believe that they have to personally agree with every narrative choice made by the writers and creators of a game. In some bizarre sense, it’s almost as if they think that player agency is code for self gratification; that every aspect of a piece of art should align with their own personal preferences, chosen morality, and general outlook on things.

Which brings us to The Last of Us: Part 2. Naughty Dog’s smartly priced Remastered release is due out tomorrow, featuring an admittedly minor and iterative graphical upgrade, a bunch of new customisation and accessibility options, and the No Return roguelike survival mode. It’s clearly the definitive version of an already great game.

If it’s not for you, or perhaps you don’t see the value (even with the £10 upgrade path), then that’s fair enough. But why use this as a way to belittle hard working developers? If it’s not your thing, just move along.

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
